The work of Eating Disorders Foundation
The Eating Disorders Foundation Inc. (EDF) delivers a unique service, providing support and information to those affected by eating disorders and advocating for the needs of this population group whose illnesses are misunderstood and trivialized.
The Foundation employs qualified staff with expertise in eating disorders to run programmes to assist in recovery and provide vital links between hospitals, patients, family, schools and community.
We help people with eating disorders to restart their lives, strengthening connections with families and friends, furthering opportunities in education, employment and recreation, as well as developing their personal resilience and coping skills.
The Eating Disorders Foundation provides much needed, invaluable and practical support for families and people who live with eating disorders.
Eating disorders can and do affect anyone; males and females of all different age groups and across socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Eating disorders are the 3rd most common chronic health problem affecting young women in Australia, after obesity and asthma. Anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder are the most widely recognized eating disorders. All these can lead to serious health complications and can negatively impact on mood and self esteem.
The evidence is that the incidence of eating disorders is increasing and the age of onset is getting younger.
We are a non-profit organization that aims to assist people whose lives are affected by eating disorders, to raise awareness of the destructive effects of dangerous forms of weight loss and to create greater tolerance of the diversity of body shape and weight.
We believe that every person has the right to feel comfortable and happy in their own skin.
